As with the Chardonnay, Duke’s underlying earthiness is there on the nose, in the guise of cumin spice and smokiness. Above that are bright, crunchy red-fruit scents of cranberry, pomegranate, raspberry and morello cherry tinged with orange peel. Bright red fruits lead the palate, too, which has a light sheen of oak and lovely dark spice notes. It has deceptive intensity and gently grainy tannins complete the sense of strength and stealth. It’s medium-bodied and fairly straight through the mouth, fanning out on a long finish that resonates with fruit, spice and tang.
