2023 MESSIRE Pinot Noir
Messire's underlying earthiness is there on the nose, in the guise of cumin spice and smokiness. Above that are bright, crunchy red-fruit scents of cranberry, pomegranate, raspberry and morello cherry tinged with orange peel. Bright red fruits lead the palate, too, which has a light sheen of oak and lovely dark spice notes. It has deceptive intensity and gently grainy tannins complete the sense of strength and stealth. It’s medium-bodied and fairly straight through the mouth, fanning out on a long finish that resonates with fruit, spice and tang.

“Pinot Noir demands time – both to develop in bottle and then in the glass – and the Messire is a case in point. It’s a brash young thing right after pouring but mellows the longer it breathes, its aromas and flavours coming together in cohesion to offer something really lovely. There’s a pretty even mix between fruity and savoury characters here, such as sour cherry, wild strawberry, black cherry, forest floor, herbs and beetroot, plus some stemminess. The palate is silky and quite rich, the dusty tannins giving it some interest and grip in the mouth.
